HISTORY

Three generations
at the helm since 1946

SACCHETTO S.P.A.

The story
of a family business

The history of the company, which bears the family name, began in 1946, when Santino Sacchetto decided to invest in his dream: producing raw materials for the food industry. In over 70 years of operation, many new goals have been achieved, always respecting the historical origins and the values imparted by previous generations.

THE PROJECT

1946

The hardworking Santino Sacchetto submitted to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry plans for a new plant for the production of unique preserves and fruit jelly in the center of Lagnasco.

FIRST DISTILLATION COLUMN

1950

The UTIF (Technical Office of Production tax) in Turin issued license no. 8 to open a distillery, and a distillation column for the production of raw alcohol was installed.

ALCOHOL FOR FOOD INDUSTRY

1952

With the installation of a new rectification column, the company began producing alcohol for the food industry. This helped to optimize prices and generated a production volume of 8 hectoliters a day.

ALCOHOL AND FRUIT

1960

Over the years the production of alcohol from fruit increased, generating a production volume of 45 hectoliters a day — equivalent to 100 tonnes of fruit a day (mostly apples and pears).

BUSINESS EXPANSION

1966

As the company could not be further expanded in the city centre, production was relocated to the suburbs: new buildings and production plants were built. As a result, it generated a production volume of 120 hectoliters a day of processed fruit — equivalent to 240 tonnes a day.

EUROPEAN COMMUNITY

1968

Due to the large fruit surplus on the market, the European Community allowed the foundation of national institutions (Italian A.I.M.A) for agricultural market measures aimed to guarantee prices, allocating this surplus also to distillation.

NEW PLANT

1980

The one-person company Santino Sacchetto grew: with help from sons Giuliano and Giuseppe, the company Santino Sacchetto S.r.l. was founded. Moreover, a new double-acting vacuum distillation plant was purchased with a capacity of 300 hectoliters a day. Since then, we have been processing all kinds of agricultural raw materials, including apples, pears, peaches, wine, potatoes and molasses.

PRODUCT DIVERSIFICATION

1985

The process of product diversification began: we started using soft wheat as a raw material, thereby obtaining starch and proteins, in addition to alcohol.

ORGANIC AGRICULTURE

1987

The company also started processing raw materials from certified organic agricultural products. This enabled us to expand production and target foreign markets interested in these new goods.

PRODUCTION INCREASE

1987 - 2000

The company kept growing thanks to investments in optimising and improving production capacity: obsolete equipment was replaced, leading to an increase in quality and a stronger focus on energy efficiency. Beyond that, production lines were implemented to expand the product range with new offerings, such as native gluten-free wheat starch and modified wheat starch.

SACCHETTO GREEN

2003

The company kept investing in green programmes, such as renewable energy sources: a biogas-fuelled cogeneration plant with a nominal power of 3 MW was installed.

JOINT-STOCK COMPANY

2004

Santino Sacchetto S.r.l. became a joint-stock company, and Sacchetto S.p.a. was established.

RAW MATERIAL DIVERSIFICATION

2012

A new starch manufacturing plant designated solely for rice processing was opened, thus setting in motion the commercialisation of derivatives such as starches, proteins and flakes mostly processed from Italian rice.

THERMAL POWER STATION

2018

A new natural gas high-performance thermal generation and cogeneration plant was installed; it has an overall nominal power of 16 MW.

PLANT EXPANSION

2022

The innovative Ring Dryer plant was activated, delivering a considerable increase in production and energy efficiency per unit.
