Rice starch is increasingly used in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industry, thanks to its innumerable properties but also to the fact that it is a completely natural and therefore highly sustainable ingredient.

Environmental sustainability is a topic dear to more and more people. At a global level, the greater sensitivity towards issues relating to environmental health has led companies to increasingly question themselves deeply about the quality, naturalness and sustainability of their products. In many industrial sectors, the race for sustainability has become a challenge that no modern company can afford to miss.

This is why the role of natural ingredients in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industry is undergoing a total re-evaluation in this historical period: today research and technology is going to the direction of trying to make the most of these substances, enhancing their effects and maximizing results that can be obtained from their use, also in combination with other products of natural origin.

Clean Label: not only a trend but also a consumer need

The birth of “clean labels” is an expression of this trend, which actually hides a real need from the consumer who is increasingly attentive to his purchases, interested in protecting the environment and predisposed to make choices oriented towards sustainability.

The clean label does not yet have a legally recognized meaning: however, even these labels must comply with the relevant EU regulations, respecting the criterion of total transparency.

This means that “clean” label tells us that a product is free of a certain substance – such as a chemical additive – by law that substance must not be present in the product itself.

Even if the legislation is still being defined, clean labels help the consumers to orient themself at this moment in the vast sea of products available, choosing the products that best meet their expectations on the basis of the labels.

Rice Starch role in the Cosmetic and Pharma industries

The role of rice starch in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industry should also be seen in this context. Today it is a very used and much requested product, an ingredient present in many preparations of different nature thanks to its numerous properties: versatility, naturalness and sustainability.

What is Rice Starch?

Rice starch is a polysaccharide, a complex carbohydrate of vegetable origin, composed of two glucose polymers: amylose and amylopectin.

It comes in the form of a whitish powder (flour), with low viscosity, insoluble in cold water, odorless and tasteless.

Even if starches are all different from each other, rice is not the only cereal in which starch is present: wheat, for example, is also rich in it.

This is why starch plays a crucial role in human nutrition, an aspect that makes it widely usable and consequently used in the food industry.

What is it for?

The salient feature of rice starch is its polyhedral granules, meaning  angular and very small particles. This aspect gives rice starch a series of properties that make it extremely suitable for use in cosmetics:

  • ·        adsorbent properties
  • ·        hygroscopic properties
  • ·        viscosity properties
  • ·        humectant properties
  • ·        thickening properties
  • ·        refreshing properties

For example, starch is a substitute for talcum powder because it absorbs moisture. Combined with creams and oils, it helps to reduce oiliness and give a filming effect. In deodorants it helps the absorption of sweat and bad smells.

In powders and bath salts it is very useful to enhance the soothing and anti-itch effect. Applied directly to the skin, the starch absorbs excess sebum and moisture, reducing irritation and leaving the skin soft and velvety. According to recent studies it would also have repairing properties, because reducing transdermal water loss helps the skin to repair itself, reinforcing the skin barrier.

How is it used?

Starch is then used in the food, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries as:

  • ·    excipient, especially in pharmaceutical and food preparations, for the production of tablets and the preparation of bakery products, because it improves the dough characteristics, enhancing the flavors and lengthening the shelf life of the finished products
  • ·      thickener and stabilizer in the food industry for the preparation of creams, puddings and sauces
  • ·      soothing, absorbing and softening in the cosmetics industry also for children, in the production of detergents for children’s skin and powders and creams for the treatment of dry skin prone to dermatitis or redness

Organic products allow you to preserve the territory, the environment and pay more attention at personal health. Let’s discover together the advantages of organic food.

The advantages of organic productions are varied and all linked with better natural resources management, as well as final consumers health. Sacchetto SpA is committed in keeping part of its production of wheat and rice derivatives as organic, not only to satisfy even the most demanding customers, but also to contribute to a more sustainable future for both agriculture and economy.

Why choose organic products?

Organic is the new frontier of environmental protection and consumer health. Organic products, to be considered as such, must obtain the mark recognized by the European Community, which certifies compliance with numerous production standards, during all supply chain stages: from raw material cultivation to final product processing.

For this reason, the organic brand is synonymous of guaranteed control over the entire production chain and the finished product quality.

Organic Advantages

Choosing organic means respecting the environment and offering products that guarantee a better supply of essential nutrients and antioxidants, important allies for final consumers health. Therefore organic products guarantee a better nutritional and organoleptic quality, but also a sanitary quality, because they are free from antibiotics, hormones, GMOs and additives. Furthermore, the organic supply chain has a much lower rate of generated pollution: by giving up chemical pesticides, it does not disperse toxic substances into the environment, it saves on energy and water consumption. This increases not only the environmental quality, but also the social quality, because it has a positive impact on society, with a view to preserving natural resources, reducing their exploitation and supporting their renewal, when possible.

Sacchetto Organic Products

Sacchetto Organic Products are divided into two derivates: organic Wheat and Rice derivates.

Rice Derivates

As rice derivatives, Sacchetto produces Native Organic Starch. Extracted with mechanical action and use of water from organic rice grown mainly in the EU, organic rice starch is subsequently dried to keep all its characteristics intact, and used in the food industry as a thickener, for example for the production of creams and sauces, in the cosmetic industry as an sprinkler powder and in the formulation of detergents, especially for children, and in the pharmaceutical industry, in the production of capsules and tablets.

Wheat Derivates

Among the wheat derivates, Sacchetto boasts a wider offer, from starch to vital gluten to ethylic alcohol. Let’s discover the various products together.

Organic Wheat Starch

It is extracted from European Community soft wheat and dried. With a thickening and excipient function, it finds various applications both in the food and pharmaceutical industries.

Organic Wheat Starch Gluten-Free

Very noble product with same characteristics of Organic Starch but with another major advantage: Gluten content lower than 20 ppm. This quality allows this product to be used in many food applications suitable for all consumers who suffer celiac disease.

Organic Wheat Gluten

Organic Gluten, as a thickener and high protein product, is used in the preparation of various foods especially vegetarian, such as seitan. Extracted from selected organic wheats from the European Community, wheat gluten is then dried at low temperatures so that it retains all its nutritional characteristics unaltered

Organic wheat ethyl alcohol.

Used in the food sector for conservation, pharmaceutical and cosmetic for disinfection, organic wheat ethyl alcohol is obtained through enzymatic transformation and subsequent fermentation of the starch extracted from organic wheat of the European Community.

Rice derivatives, from starch in powder and flakes, to rice protein, are precious products that find many applications in various sectors. Let’s find out features and properties

Rice is a precious cereal, from which it is possible to obtain products that are widely used not only in the food and nutrition sector, but also in the zootechnical, pharmaceutical and cosmetic fields.

Let’s see together what all the rice derivatives are, how they are obtained and what use they are destined for in the various industrial sectors.

What are Sacchetto Rice Derivates?

The rice derivatives produced by Sacchetto SpA are mainly 4: Native Rice StarchWaxy rice StarchRice Protein and Rice Flakes, which is nothing but crystallized starch, extremely pure.

Let’s see together in detail the characteristics of each product, what is its main use, what its benefits and advantages are, what the main areas of application and, finally, the processing techniques that allow Sacchetto SpA to obtain a product with high quality standards.

Native Rice Starch

It is one of the most widespread and used rice derivative. In particular, in recent years, rice starch has been re-evaluated for its thickening properties, resistance to heat and hypo allergenicity. These and other characteristics make it an ideal product to be used both in the food industry, for example bakery, newborn and gluten-free products, but also in the chemical, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries, thanks to its white color, the high digestibility and the small size of its particles. Available in both conventional and organic quality.

Find out more about rice starch here.

Waxy Rice Starch

Waxy (or WX) Rice Starch is a high protein variant resulting from the Waxy broken rice, which is distinguished by some specific characteristics that make it a niche product, specifically:

  • High amylopectin content, which confers greater resistance to retrogradation
  • Low gelling temperature
  • High viscosity at cold and hot temperature
  • High resistance to temperatures and acid pH in the WX-HS variant
  • High resistance to temperatures and acid pH in the WX-HS variant

Rice Protein

Rice protein finds great application especially in the food industry, where thanks to its neutral taste and the absence of gluten, it is widely used both as a thickener and stabilizer, and as an excipient to increase the protein content.

In fact, rice protein is the one with the highest biological value, that is, more usable for the human body.

Rice Flakes

Rice starch in flakes is the purest and most candid product of rice processing among all the derivatives of this cereal. Rice crystals are characterized by their easy solubility in water, high chalkiness and the consequent ability to give a highly velvety texture to cosmetic preparations.

In fact, the rice flakes are mainly used in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industry for their soothing and emollient effect. Moreover, the low pH also makes them ideal for the production of cosmetic products as baby bath, and in the chemical industry, for the preparation of products capable of protecting fabrics by preventing the penetration of impurities into the fibers.

All these products are mainly obtained through grinding, extraction with mechanical action and the use of water, sieving and separation, finally drying.

The whole process is carried out entirely at the Sacchetto SpA production plant, in compliance with current European Community regulations and the best hygienic-sanitary conditions, in order to maintain the final product characteristics intact.

Wheat derivatives and their by-products are many and suitable for various purposes, not only in human and feed nutrition. Let’s find out all the products that can be obtained from this cereal

Wheat is a cereal with a thousand uses, extremely versatile whose derivatives lend themselves to many different uses. Let’s see together what the main derivatives and by-products from wheat are, what they are used for and in which variants they are available.

Wheat derivates and their applications

The main wheat uses concern the production of starches, gluten and alcoholates. Let’s explore this main type of product together.

Wheat Starch

It’s a dry powder product with a very low protein content, vegetable origin, which is produced starting from the wheat flour soaking and it’s used in many areas: from the food sector, where it represents a natural thickener used mainly in bakery products, to the pharmaceutical one, up to industrial production, where it’s used as glue and whitener.

Sacchetto produces both Native Wheat Starch (also available in an organic version) and some variants that serve specific purposes in niche sectors:

  • Gluten-Free Starch – indicated for the preparation of gluten-free food products
  • Wheat Starch M102 – modified starch, used in the paper industry mainly as glue

Wheat Alcohol

Wheat is an excellent cereal for alcohol production: it’s obtained from the enzymatic transformation and fermentation of wheat starch and performs various functions: from the production of alcoholic beverages to anti-mold, from food preservative to disinfectant or solvent.

Its main use is certainly aimed at the production of alcoholates such as liqueurs and vodka.

Its anti-mold and preservative capacity are on the other hand exploited by the food industry which requires what we call flavored alcoholic product: a vanilla flavored wheat alcohol. This product is obtained by mixing wheat ethyl alcohol with 100% natural vanilla flavor (use free of excise duty), used for baked goods treatment and storage.

Regarding solvents or disinfectants field, a specific product is used, the heads and tails alcohol, which Sacchetto produces through a fractional distillation process from mother cider. Here’s where the heads and tails are separated from the rest of ethyl alcohol, intended as solvent in chemical sector and disinfectant in household and industrial cleaning products.

Wheat gluten.

Lastly, just as it is possible to remove gluten from wheat starch, in the same way it’s possible to extract gluten only contained in this cereal. Vital wheat gluten finds application in the food sector as an ingredient for bread making, for the production of high-quality baked goods and as an improver of soft wheat flour.

Wheat by-products

Flour and bran are just two of the numerous derivatives that can be obtained from wheat processing: this process requires not only grinding, but also many mechanical washing, fermentation, distillation, centrifugation, and drying processes.

The best known products are undoubtedly those derived from the grinding of wheat grain, the ones that derives from the production of flour: bran and wheat middling are the “waste” products immediately preceding the flour refining, and are well known as used in nutrition with a high protein content in the livestock industry.

Alongside these products, feeds and supplements, we also find other derivatives of wheat for feed use, such as wheat distiller: an insoluble dry by-product, with a high protein content and a considerable amount of vitamins. It’s used as protein supplement and bacterial flora stimulant, especially in bulls and calves nutrition.

The wheat protein concentrate on the other hand, it’s a liquid supplement rich in yeasts, and suitable for feeding all ruminants.

Rice protein is widely used as a food supplement due to its many undisputed benefits. Let’s see together what rice protein is and how it is obtained, how it is used and what its benefits are

Rice protein is a isolate vegan protein that is obtained through an extraction process starting from the kernels, the seed of Oryza Sativa cereal.

Rice protein represents a very valid alternative to other isolate proteins, both vegetable or animal origin, as well as soy or whey protein: this is because rice, with about 7% protein, although is not the most protein-rich cereal, it is the one whose proteins have the highest biological value, in other words they are qualitatively better than those of wheat or corn.

Let’s see together how rice protein is obtained, how it looks and what are its uses and benefits in various sectors, from food such as baked goods to sport and health nutrition.

Rice protein: what it is and how to obtain it

Rice protein appears as a dry flour product, that is in powder, light beige color and odorless. It is obtained during the production of rice starch through mechanical processes that allow its extraction, that is:

  • grinding
  • sieving
  • separation
  • drying

Depending on the type of rice used, the biological value of the rice protein may vary slightly. In any case, the biological value of rice protein is higher than other cereals: according to the FAO it equals to 69, compared to wheat 49 and corn 44. The reason is, despite being lacking in some essential amino acids that are instead found in proteins of animal origin, such as tryptophan, it has on the other hand high percentages of threonine and methionine.

Rice protein: various uses

Thanks to all these characteristics, rice protein is mainly used in the food and pharmaceutical industry as a protein supplement for those who follow a vegan diet or for those who, due to intolerances, cannot have animal-derived proteins – for example those deriving from whey.

Rice proteins are also suitable for those suffering from celiac disease, because rice doesn’t contain the protein portion responsible for gluten composition.

Furthermore, rice is well tolerated in the gastrointestinal tract because it is absorbed faster than animal proteins.

Rice protein: all its benefits

Rice proteins, are used as supplements in the food such as baked good, sport and health nutrition, where they are able to bring numerous benefits.

Let’s see some of them:

  • neutral taste that won’t compromise the product formulation
  • integration of important proteins not taken in vegan diets
  • highly digestible and also suitable for those suffering from celiac disease or food intolerances
  • contribution to the growth and maintenance of muscle mass
  • necessary for normal bone development in children and for bone health maintenance in adults
  • reduction in blood glucose, insulin and cholesterol peaks
  • taken after physical activity, they promote recovery after training and increase muscle mass in athletes
  • eco-sustainable, because their production has a much less impact on the environment than that of other animal-derived proteins, such as egg and whey

Plastic plays a vital role, both in industries and in our daily life. We may not realize it, but this material – thanks to its countless qualities and versatility of use – it’s omnipresent in our lives. Plastic derivatives are now widely used for various applications, whether these are in the clothing sector, in packaging industries with but also for toys, IT components, electronic devices and much more. Automotive industries also use plastics, not to mention the amount of plastic that is used in offices, construction and manufacturing. But what impact does the use of all this plastic have on the environment and human health?

Plastic: the greatest enemy of the environment

In recent decades, the production of plastic – which sees the use of oil as its basis – has increased by over 300 million tons, a figure collected in 2015, and with current times this trend has certainly not improved.

With the production of plastic objects, there is a strong emission of carbon and dozens of other harmful gases, which are the main causes of climate change and environmental impact.

Generally, plastics are composed of polyethylene, which can in turn be divided into low-density and high-density polyethylene: they are today among the most used materials in industries around the world. Light, versatile and long-lasting, this substance, however, has a strong disadvantage that should not be underestimated: its non-biodegradability.

Over a billion tons of plastic have been lost on the planet, and it could take several hundred years for them to degrade and be disposed of by the environment.

Fortunately, today the environmental emergency is one of the priorities of new corporate marketing strategies that care about sustainability, the planet and the health of mankind.

The percentage of plastic in municipal solid waste continues to grow more and more rapidly: when it comes to dispose and discharged it in landfills, it often happens that, in contact with water, they release dangerous chemicals which, in the long run, can also compromise the quality of the drinking water that reaches our homes.

Rice starch: an alternative to smart and sustainable plastic

For several years now we have been hearing about biodegradable plastics. But what are they? These materials are mainly made up of rice starch – which today remains one of the strongest allies in the field of bioplastics – but corn starch and cellulose are also often used for these purposes.

Thanks to the use of rice starch bioplastic, in addition to dispersing less toxic waste into the environment, we also have other very important advantages, such as a strong reduction in the use of fossil fuels and carbon dioxide emissions.

Rice starch bioplastics: what impact they have on the environment

The biodegradability of these plastics has had a highly positive impact not only on the environment but also on society. Today we are progressively trying to increase the spread and awareness of all the advantages that the use of this type of packaging brings.

Rice starch is completely biodegradable, and is widely used in different types of industries and for a variety of products in which plastic recycling is encouraged, especially in the food sector.

It is a real revolution in the field of sustainability: the creation of bioplastics deriving from natural elements, presents multiple applications that go beyond the simple food packaging, but can also be used in other fields such as the medicine.

Starch, present in rice but also in many other cereals such as corn or tubers, is a polysaccharide composed of two glucose polymers, amylose and amylopectin.

Despite it is a fragile polymer, starch can be treated with heat and water through a gelatization process, suitable for processing techniques that makes it similar to plastic.

Even if after all, starch can be less resistant than plastic, this should not be misleading: its use, in fact, generally occurs over all those sectors that use plastic in disposable packaging, decreasing significantly pollution and taking an important step forward to preserve the human being health and our planet.

If your company deals with the production of bioplastics, rice starch is certainly the ideal solution to reduce the environmental impact and business costs.
